Without a single upperclassman taking the court this weekend, the Binghamton University women’s tennis team went 4-10 in singles play at the USTA BJK NTC Women’s College Invitational. The event was held in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., home of the U.S. Open.

Freshman Sara Kohtz had the best weekend overall, advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating University of Delaware’s Carmen Lai 6-2, 6-3 in her first match.

A 1-6, 2-6 loss to Columbia University’s Lauren Stratman prevented Kohtz from advancing to the Flight D semifinals, but she had another opportunity in the Flight E singles main draw playoff. However, No. 1 seeded Katie Goepel of Princeton University ended Kohtz’s performance at the invitational, defeating the freshman 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

In an opening round match in the Flight C bracket, Bearcat freshman Shea Brodsky lost a heartbreaker to No. 4 seeded Amber Li of Yale University, 5-7, 4-6. Brodsky went on to lose her following consolation match, but ended the weekend on a positive note, defeating Charleston Southern University’s Alexandra Walters.

The other two singles wins came from freshmen Agatha Ambrozy and Alexis Tashiro, both in consolation matches.

Ambrozy defeated Noor Judeh from Rutgers University 6-4, 6-4 in the Flight F consolation, but fell short of a second win in the consolation bracket after a disappointing 5-7, 4-6 loss to Providence College’s Taylor Corder.

Tashiro’s win came in her final match of the weekend, easily defeating West Point’s Eva Sung 6-0, 6-4.

As for the lone sophomore at play for the Bearcats this weekend, Katherine Medianik lost both of her matches while competing in the Flight B bracket. The first loss came against top-seeded Bianca Sanon of Columbia.

The weekend’s two doubles teams from Binghamton combined to win only one of five matches. The win came from the Tashiro and Medianik duo, who knocked off St. John University’s Gvantsa Robakidze and Nevena Selakovic by a score of 8-5.

The Bearcats are scheduled to have the upcoming weekend off before they head to West Point for the ITA Regional, which is set for Oct. 19-23.
