The Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team dropped its second consecutive game, falling to the University of Connecticut Huskies on Saturday by a slim margin of 14-12.

After trailing 11-6 early in the second half, BU (0-2) rallied to tie the game at 12 with 3:51 remaining. But just 39 seconds later, UConn sophomore Lauren Kahn netted the game-winning goal for the Huskies (3-1), who would later tack on another goal for the two-score win.

Binghamton was led on offense by senior Lis Zuern, who had two assists and five goals on eight shots for a career-high seven points. Zuern also assisted on the tying goal in the second half, scored by senior Allie Sabitus.

Seniors M.E. Lapham and Kiersten Tupper led UConn on offense, each recording four goals.

The Bearcats, who fell behind 4-0 early, failed to score a goal until more than 11 minutes into the game. But they would follow with a 3-1 run to pull within two goals of UConn.

When the Huskies extended their lead to 10-5, the Bearcats sparked another rally with a 3-0 spurt.

“We fought really hard coming back down four [or more] goals twice,” BU head coach Tony Zostant said. “I was really proud of the team to tie it up. We stuck with our offense in the second half this week and were able to come back.”

With the Bearcats tied with UConn 12-12 with under four minutes to play, Zostant said his team had its opportunities but failed to capitalize.

“We had some open looks at the end,” he said. “But we just didn’t finish our shots.”

Zostant said he was happy with his team’s ability to rally, but admitted that BU’s early deficit was too much to overcome.

“You can’t spot good teams three or four goals to start off,” he said. “We spent so much energy to come back to tie it up.”

In addition to Zuern’s five goals, Sabitus and freshman Renee Kiviat each scored two, while juniors Casey Bulman, Kimberly McGeever and Kristen Stone each scored one.

“We had some balanced scoring and our offense was clicking,” Zostant said. “As a team, we played intensely on offense and defense.”

On defense, Binghamton forced two more turnovers than UConn with 18.

“We are doing a good job of being more aggressive than the other team on defense,” Zostant said. “We just want to finish more shots on offense.”

Binghamton’s next game is scheduled to be a road match against Marist College on Wednesday.

“We’re looking to focus on the first five or six minutes of the game,” Zostant said. “We just don’t want to have to start from behind again.”

Action is set to get underway at 4 p.m.
