After sweeping Hartford 4-0 in the first round of the America East tournament, Binghamton women’s tennis advanced to its 12th straight conference semifinals before falling to top-seeded Stony Brook 4-0 on Saturday at the UMBC Tennis Complex.
The Bearcats (5-17, 2-4 America East) dominated the Hawks (0-16, 0-3 AE) in doubles and singles play on Friday. Freshmen Sara Kohtz, Shea Brodsky, Alexis Tashiro and Agatha Ambrozy cruised past their opponents on the singles court in straight sets for the deciding match points. Senior Jessie Rubin was just as dominant at No. 6 singles, leading 6-1, 5-0 in her match against Hartford freshman Sarah Bennett until the game was called.
In doubles, Kohtz and sophomore Missy Edelblum made quick work of Bennett and sophomore Christie Greenberg with an 8-1 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Tashiro and Brodsky captured the first seven points against Hawks freshman Hannah Goldman and sophomore Jessica Galik to win by a score of 8-2 and secure the doubles point for Binghamton.
After their relatively comfortable win against Hartford, the Bearcats looked to carry their momentum into the semifinals matchup against Stony Brook on Saturday.
But the defending conference champion Seawolves (12-4, 6-1 AE) started strong by taking the first two doubles decisions 8-2 and 8-4, respectively. Once it became clear that the Seawolves had secured the doubles point, the No. 1 match was left unfinished at 8-7.
Stony Brook’s solid play continued in singles. SBU senior and reigning America East Player of the Year Nini Lagvilava defeated BU sophomore Katherine Medianik in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 slot. Tashiro and Ambrozy suffered similar fates at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, which ultimately gave the Seawolves a 4-0 victory.
BU finished the 2013 season with a 5-17 record. While the Bearcats will lose Rubin to graduation, they are expected to bring back six players for the 2014 campaign.
