After nine games and five weeks of non-conference play in the 2013 season, the Binghamton women’s soccer team is set to kick off its America East schedule against New Hampshire this Sunday.

The Wildcats (2-5-2) have been largely unpredictable this season, peppering the weeks with an assortment of wins, losses and ties and never taking more than two straight matches.

Last Wednesday, New Hampshire bid adieu to its non-conference season with a tie against visiting Holy Cross. The 0-0 was bittersweet; it disrupted the Wildcats’ chance at getting two consecutive wins, but it also awarded freshman goalkeeper Mimi Borkan, who saved six shots, her first shutout.

Though the scoreboard had nothing to show for it, both the Wildcats and the Crusaders (1-5-3) assailed the other’s goal — between the two teams, 37 total shots were taken with 16 of those on goal. While Holy Cross paved the way with 19 shots overall, the Wildcats proved more accurate, with 10 of theirs heading Crusader goalie Carly McCabe’s way.

For their part, the Bearcats (5-3-1) overcame a three-game slump on Monday night with a last-minute goal against host Army. After 79 minutes and 21 shots, freshman forward Michele Galvin netted a cross in the box from classmate Allison Mack to propel Binghamton to its 1-0 win.

Army maintained a shot advantage, notching 16 out of the game’s 25 total. But, like New Hampshire, the Bearcats shot with better precision than their opponent; 70 percent of theirs were on goal.

When New Hampshire and BU met on Sept. 27 last year, two games into their respective conference seasons, the teams played to a double-overtime draw. For the past 10 years, the teams have either come to a draw or a one-goal decision.

Binghamton held a slight advantage last year, outshooting its opponent, 18-12. Then-junior keeper Carrie Martin held down the goal for the first half, making a crucial save with less than four minutes remaining. Classmate Stephanie Speirs took the latter half, and the two goalies split the shutout.

Moving forward, the Bearcats are set to host UMBC on Oct. 3, one of their four upcoming home contests. The Golden Retrievers (5-3-2) are scheduled to open their conference match-ups against Maine on Sept. 29 before heading to Binghamton.
