Jordan Reed will be back in uniform for tonight’s bout with Hartford.

Though Tommy Dempsey would not disclose specific details behind the sophomore guard’s one-game suspension, the second-year head coach of the Binghamton men’s basketball team declared he made a coach’s decision to leave Reed in Vestal for the Bearcats’ trip to Albany on Monday. No violation of University policy occurred.

Reed, who also missed the first two games of his freshman year while serving a suspension stemming from an arrest, practiced with the team on Wednesday. Dempsey did not say if the sophomore would be in the starting lineup when the game tips at approximately 7 p.m tonight.

“I just had a talk with him, and just decided that the time was right to bring him back,” Dempsey said. “It wasn’t anything that warranted anything more than it got.”

Without Reed, the Bearcats (4-14, 1-4 AE) clung to the third-place Great Danes (10-9, 4-2 AE) in a 66-60 loss. Freshman forward Nick Madray had an opportunity to put Binghamton ahead with 13 seconds left, but his 3-pointer fell short and Albany sealed its victory at the foul line.

Even though Binghamton has played more efficient basketball without Reed at times this year, the Bearcats expressed excitement at the prospect of teaming up with their leading scorer (14.9 ppg) again.

In two games against Hartford last year, Reed averaged 15 points but shot a combined 10 for 28 from the floor. He also averaged eight rebounds and two steals.

“Jordan’s going to get us going,” Madray said. “He grabs rebounds. He fires us up with those electrifying dunks. He’s really athletic. He sparks us.”

Dempsey said he hopes Reed has learned his lesson, adding that only time can measure the success of the disciplinary move.

“I think it’s part of your growth process as a young man,” Dempsey said. “You’re going to go through some bumps in the road at times, and you bounce back and you show what you’re made of. I’m confident he’ll do that.”
