With its first shot at game-action since falling to Penn State in the NCAA tournament, the Binghamton volleyball team lost to St. John’s, 3-1, in the opening game of the Colgate Classic at Cotterell Court.
The Bearcats (0-1) dropped the first set by 13 points and fell short, 25-19, in the second before rallying for a 25-22 victory in the third. In the fourth set, a kill by BU junior outside hitter Kristin Hovie cut the deficit to 21-20, but the Red Storm (1-0) rallied for a 25-22 match-clinching win.
Hovie and her sister, freshman outside hitter Allison Hovie, combined for 22 of Binghamton’s 45 kills, while junior setter Amanda Dettmann posted a team-high 30 assists.
Junior libero Xiomara Ortiz tallied a game-high 12 digs, though St. John’s edged Binghamton 49-42 in the category.
The Bearcats are set for a doubleheader on Saturday, with afternoon matches against Central Connecticut State and host Colgate capping off the season-opening tournament.
Action against CCSU is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
