Binghamton men’s basketball sophomore guard Romello Walker has been granted release from his scholarship and will transfer from BU, according to an email from the athletics department.

Following a freshman campaign in which he started 31 of 32 games, the Florida native injured his shoulder just a month into his sophomore season. He was granted a medical redshirt and was expected to return to competition in the fall. Walker will retain three years of eligibility if he transfers to a Division II or Division III school, but would have to miss next season if he transfers to another Division I program, in accordance with NCAA transfer rules.

Walker was Binghamton’s second backcourt loss in 2015-16, as junior guard Yosef Yacob also sat out after sustaining a shoulder injury in the preseason. In the seven games he played, Walker averaged 4.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, down from of 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest in his rookie season. BU went on to finish sixth in the America East this year, recording just five conference wins.

Walker’s departure from the program is Binghamton’s fourth in two seasons, following former Bearcats Jordan Reed, Nick Madray and Magnus Richards.
