Looking to build on recent success, the Binghamton University men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Northeast Regional held at Yale University over the weekend. Senior Bastian Bornkessel, junior Ruben Haggai and sophomores Robin Lesage, Ismael Dinia and Florian van Kann all won singles matches for Binghamton. Columbia University, Harvard University, Brown University and Boston College also competed at the tournament.
Each Binghamton player earned victory in straight sets, except for Dinia, who downed St. Bonaventure junior Elliot Fanshel in three sets. Not only was Dinia excellent in his singles performance, but he also fared well in his doubles matchup alongside Bornkessel. The tandem defeated sophomore Shaun Chaudhuri and freshman Nicholas Mahlangu of Harvard to advance to the next round.
The Haggai and van Kann duo was also able to win its first match of the tournament, posting an 8-4 score against a doubles pair from St. John’s University.
Overall, the Bearcats acquired seven key victories, providing a much needed spark for the squad heading into the offseason. With its series of fall invitationals now completed, Binghamton will look forward to head-to-head play, starting with a match at the University of Toledo on Jan. 26.
