The Binghamton University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in the America East Swimming and Diving Championship this weekend.
The men finished in third place with 604 points at the four-day event, while the women placed last with only 285 points.
Tournament host Boston University won both competitions with scores of 896.5 by the men and 741 by the women. University of Maryland, Baltimore County was the only other school to finish ahead of the Binghamton men.
Though neither Binghamton team earned a top finish, both provided noteworthy performances.
On the men’s side, senior Nolan Slesnick led the way with three individual medals. He earned a bronze medal in the 500 free with a time of 4:30.50 on Friday night before taking the silver in the 400 Individual Medley on Saturday with a time of 3:56.78.
The senior’s most impressive victory came on Sunday in the 1650 free, which he won with a school-record time of 15:34.41. Slesnick held the previous record of 15:41.03, and the gold medal he received was the fourth of his career. UMBC’s Charlie Melesh placed second in the event with a time of 15:49.12.
Slesnick was also part of the 800 free relay team that placed second with a time of 6:47.44. Juniors Aaron Budner and Devon Byrt and senior Dan Feeley completed the group.
For his outstanding performance, Slesnick received the 2012 Coaches’ Award.
Three other Bearcat men earned individual medals. Junior Tim Cabasino captured the silver medal in the 100 free, finishing in 45.48. He finished just .01 seconds ahead of UMBC freshman Lauri Kaei.
Freshman diver Devin Zdanowski and junior Josh Saccurato each gathered bronze medals. Zdanowski tallied 256.10 points on the three-meter board while Saccurato finished the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.61, a career-high in the event.
The men’s 400 free relay team also collected a silver medal, placing behind Boston University with a time of 3:03.69.
On the women’s side, junior Olivia Baczek led the way with two silver medals. She completed the 50 free in 23.64 seconds, just .04 seconds behind UMBC senior Abbey McKenney. She then broke Binghamton’s school record in the 200 back set in 2003 by finishing in a time of 2:02.42.
Freshman Corinne Zotter captured the women’s sole gold medal of the tournament, completing the 100 breast in a time of 1:03.89. Her time eclipsed Binghamton’s school record, which she had set earlier in the year.
Leading up to the conference championship, the men had participated in eight scoring matches, winning two and losing six. They fell to Boston University but beat Stony Brook University in their two America East regular season matches.
The women also engaged in eight matches in the regular season. They lost five but beat Drexel University, Saint Bonaventure University and Stony Brook University.
