The Binghamton men’s tennis team will shoot for its seventh straight America East championship next weekend. It would also be the program’s last.
The Mid-American Conference announced Monday that it had accepted the Bearcats men’s tennis squad, effective in the fall. Binghamton, which has won nine America East titles, will compete with Buffalo, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan in the MAC. Four of the six teams will earn berths to the conference championship, where they will vie for a spot in the NCAA tournament.
“The MAC has a longstanding tradition of excellence throughout its sport offerings and the caliber of men’s tennis in particular is strong,” Binghamton Athletics Director Patrick Elliott said in a statement released by the school. “Under [head] coach [Adam] Cohen’s leadership, we believe our Binghamton program will be a great fit both academically and athletically, while representing the MAC with integrity and sportsmanship. We’re eager to begin competition in the 2014-15 year. I want to thank MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher and the member institutions for this opportunity.”
Over the weekend, the Bearcats won their last two America East regular-season matches, downing Stony Brook and Hartford by scores of 4-1 and 7-0, respectively. The America East tournament is scheduled to begin on April 25 at UMBC.
