The Binghamton University men’s tennis team had a difficult time finding its stride this past weekend, leaving the Virginia Ranked Plus 1 Invitational with an overall record of 4-11.
The invitational, hosted by University of Virginia, featured 48 players from 11 schools and included four top-25 nationally ranked players.
Junior Bastian Bornkessel, one of three Bearcats competing, led the team in wins over the weekend, going 2-2 in singles play. After dropping his first two games, however, Bornkessel only placed 13th out of the 15 players competing in the tournament’s “Blue Singles” bracket.
Bornkessel, playing with junior Ruben Devos, also won one of three doubles matches.
Devos struggled as well in his singles bracket, losing his first three games. His one win in singles play was a default victory due to an opponent’s injury. Devos placed 14th out of 16 competitors in the “White Singles” bracket.
Most disconcerting to the BU team was an injury suffered by senior Alexandre Haggai during his first match. Although the injury forced Haggai to forfeit during the third set, BU head coach Adam Cohen said it was relatively minor.
“He tried to play through the injury, but it just wasn’t looking too good,” Cohen said. “It was best for him to retire.”
Cohen stated that the injury was to Haggai’s quadriceps, but said he “wouldn’t call it serious by any means.”
Haggai’s injury forced him to go 0-4 during the tournament, as he also forfeited the remainder of his matches.
With four scheduled fall tournaments remaining, the Bearcats have plenty of room to improve and prepare for the spring season.
Cohen voiced his disappointment with the team’s results, but remained enthusiastic.
“This was a very high-level tournament,” he said. “[It was] a chance for us to stack up against some nationally ranked teams.”
The Bearcats are scheduled to play this weekend in the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
