With just 12 seconds left in regulation, Columbia scored the game-winning goal to earn a 2-1 win over the Binghamton men’s soccer team Wednesday night in Manhattan.

“It was a match that was very competitive on both sides of the ball,” head coach Paul Marco said. “The opponent was quite good – Columbia was pretty well organized, they were pretty efficient with the ball.”

With one minute left in regulation Columbia (6-4-2) was awarded a corner kick, which was deflected out of bounds by a Binghamton (3-8-4, 1-1-2 AE) player. This set up another corner kick. Sophomore defender Bryce Terrill took the kick and defender / midfielder Antonio Matarazzo netted the ball off a header with only 12 seconds left in regulation.

“[I am] disappointed that we conceded a goal with 12 seconds left in the game,” Marco said.

The Lions opened the scoring in the game’s 58th minute when two quick passes put the ball at the feet of freshman forward Nicholas Pappacena, who tapped it into the back of the net from close range. Senior midfielder David Najem and junior midfielder Anton Wesener were each credited with an assist.

The Bearcats knotted the game at one when junior back Ben Nicholson scored off a free kick from 35 yards out in the 64^th minute. Nicholson, who has scored three goals this year, leads BU with 11 points for the season.

Despite being outshot 24-4 on the night, the Bearcats kept themselves in the game until the final seconds. The Lions’ offensive outburst led to 12 saves by sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi – his highest total of the season.

In what will be its first match against a top-10 team since 2010, the Bearcats are scheduled for a Saturday night tilt with UMBC. The Retrievers (12-1-1, 3-0-1 AE) appear at No. 7 in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll.

“It’s an important match for us,” Marco said. “They are a terrific team, they’re well-organized, they’re disciplined, they’re athletic, [and] they’re experienced.”

The match is set for 6 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
