The Binghamton University men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to the University of New Hampshire on Saturday morning to try and take home the America East Cross Country championships.

The men’s team placed sixth overall while the women placed fifth out of the eight competing schools. Stony Brook University and New Hampshire captured first and second, respectively, on both sides.

Taking first in the men’s race was Eric Speakman of Stony Brook University with a time of 25:11.

Leading the men’s team for Binghamton was sophomore Matt Johnson, who ran the 8,000 meter course in a time of 26:08, taking 17th place out of 78 runners.

“In terms of the team we had some great individual performances but with the injuries that our team was plagued with this season we couldn’t put the race together as a team,” Johnson said.

Senior Jeff Martinez finished in 22nd with a time of 26:20 and sophomores Collin Frost and Jesse Garn followed in 25th and 32nd, respectively. Freshman Ethan Hausamann took 38th with a time of 26:53.

Senior Rachel Miura led the women’s team, running the 5,000 meter course in 17:39 and finishing in 19th place. Taking 27th place was freshman Alexis Hatcher with a time of 18:07. Not far behind were freshman Lizzie Greiner in 32nd (18:18), junior Caitlin Jelinek in 38th (18:22) and freshman Naomi Barnett in 52nd (18:52).

Junior Keely McGuire of New Hampshire took first out of a field of 77 runners with a time of 16:32.

The Bearcats are set to return to action at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet on Nov. 9.
