The Binghamton golf team chipped away at a 14-stroke deficit in the final round of the Rutherford Intercollegiate at the Penn State Blue Course this weekend to capture its second straight tournament title.

The Bearcats used the tournament’s lowest-scoring round to jump from fifth to first in the team standings on Sunday and nab their third tournament win of the season. After senior David Cellura withdrew due to sickness, BU’s remaining four players recorded scores of 74 or better in the final round to put the team total at 287 (+3) and secure the victory.

Sophomore Josh Holling led the way on the final day with a one-under 70, which tied for the low of the day and catapulted him 24 spots on the individual leader board to a 15th place tie. After shooting a team-worst 81 in the opening round, Holling rebounded nicely to finish with a 54-hole total of 224.

Junior Bryce Edmister was one stroke better than Holling overall, leading the team with a 10th-place tie in what was his fifth top-10 individual appearance this season and the ninth of his career. He currently leads the Bearcats with a scoring average of 74.7 in 24 rounds played.

Sophomore Jack Sedgewick finished tied for 17th with a three-round total of 226, while freshman Jesse Perkins’ even par 71 in the final round landed him tied for 22nd overall.

“What a terrific comeback from these guys,” Binghamton head coach Bernie Herceg said, according to a press release on bubearcats.com. “Being down a man, I thought they responded about as well as you could ask of them. We put together another three solid and consistent rounds over the weekend and I couldn’t be prouder of how we competed.”

Xavier took second in the tournament, which hosted 14 different schools. Minnesota and tournament host Penn State tied for third. After sitting atop the standings at the start of the final round, Maryland found itself in fifth place to end it.

The Bearcats are set to return to action next week at the America Sky Golf Championship in San Antonio, Texas, and according to the press release, Herceg said his team feels confident.

“The teams we have beat these past two weeks are really good programs and I think this is a positive sign moving forward,” Herceg is quoted as saying on bubearcats.com. “If we play consistent and the way we are capable of, I think we have as good of a shot as anybody in San Antonio.”

The championship is scheduled for April 29 to May 1 at Dominion Country Club.
