With the in-season signing period set to end on Wednesday, Binghamton received a commitment from Nick Madray. It is unclear at this moment if Madray has signed a National Letter of Intent or if his commitment is just verbal. Given the timing of his pledge, though, assuming he has signed or will sign is not at all far-fetched.
The addition of Madray completes Binghamton’s incoming Class of 2013, and the center, who is ranked No. 55 at his position by ESPN, was the Bearcats’ top target to fill that last spot.
At 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds, Madray can play inside and outside. Reports from Madray’s sophomore and junior years of high school said the Canada native had been recruited heavily by Syracuse, and Boston College, Santa Clara and Virginia also showed significant interest.
He spent last year at Findlay Prep, a national power, and will play for the Regional Elite Development Academy in Ontario this year. Madray’s numbers at Findlay were not eye-popping, but his minutes were limited because elite recruits Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Brandon Ashley (Arizona) and Winston Shepard (San Diego State) stood ahead of him on the depth chart.
Nonetheless, Madray should give Binghamton a boost up front, teaming up with classmate Magnus Richards and juniors Roland Brown, Alex Ogundadegbe and Brian Freeman. With his ability to play outside — Findlay Prep coach Todd Simon even inserted him at the three at times last year — he can help stretch defenses and cause favorable mismatches for the Bearcats. Binghamton’s current bigs are fairly one dimensional offensively, though Brown has a pretty good touch from mid-range.
Madray and Richards are each rather versatile, so while first year head coach Tommy Dempsey has rarely played two big men at once thus far, he could potentially have three such players on the floor at the same time next year.
