The academic stress a college environment fosters can lead students to adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms. If you or someone you know is experiencing issues with substance abuse, here are some campus and community resources that can outline treatment options, provide various forms of treatment or emergency medical care or refer you to outside institutions.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Office

This on-campus resource focused on harm reduction, the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Office, aims to provide students with tools to make healthy choices regarding substance use. The office has a host of research-based services, including e-checkups and screenings for cannabis, alcohol and nicotine, enabling participants to identify environmental risk factors and possible harm-reduction strategies. Peer-to-peer counseling is also available, allowing students to openly discuss their substance use behaviors. It is located in Academic B, Room 202 and can be reached on weekdays at (607) 777-3088 and by email at aodstaff@binghamton.edu.

Campus Recovery Support Group

Created through a collaboration between the Binghamton University Counseling Center and the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Office in the spring of 2021, this service offers a peer support system. Students recovering from substance abuse, those who are considering sobriety or individuals supporting a loved one in treatment are encouraged to attend. They hold weekly, confidential meetings led by peer mentors for both undergraduate and graduate students. The relaxation and study space is in Academic B, Room 211. To become a peer mentor or recovery ally, or just to learn more about the peer support group, contact busober@binghamton.edu.

The Consultation, Advocacy, Referral and Education (CARE) Team

The CARE Team, a group of licensed social workers, acts as a liaison for students by connecting those facing complicated challenges with resources for on- and off-campus care. The team functions as a case management service for students, helping them find appropriate resources that fit their care plan. The CARE Team office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in University Union West, Room 207. You can contact the office at (607) 777-2804 or by email at dos@binghamton.edu.

The University Counseling Center (UCC)

The UCC, located in Old O’Connor Hall Room 264, employs a team of professional counselors who provide both clinical services and referrals for longer-term care. Students in need of mental health counseling or referrals for substance abuse can sign up for a confidential appointment by calling (607) 777-2772. Certified counselors are available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Addiction Center of Broome County

Located on the second floor of 30 West State St. in Binghamton, the center offers services like psychiatric evaluations, medication-assisted treatment and long-term care options, including outpatient rehabilitation. They also offer specialized services, including treatment for children and adolescents and specific interventions for those whose substance abuse stems from underlying trauma. They also offer educational resources like Narcan and suicide alertness training. The center can be reached by phone at (607) 723-7308 and is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Truth Pharm

An anti-harm organization created to address the opioid epidemic, Truth Pharm offers educational tools and does advocacy work. In addition to their overdose recognition and reversal training, the nonprofit also distributes Narcan. Their website includes information about addiction science, how opioids and opioid treatment programs work and information for individuals supporting a loved one through the first steps of treatment in their “Clearing the Confusion” series. Harpur’s Ferry

In the case of a medical emergency, Harpur’s Ferry — a student-run, free volunteer ambulance service — can be contacted at (607) 777-3333 or specifically requested after calling 911. The ambulance service has a group of trained emergency medical technicians who can aid in emergencies and are bound to patient privacy under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Harpur’s Ferry has advanced life support capabilities, meaning they can administer more advanced medications and procedures. For non-emergency calls, the station number is (607) 777-3399.
