The Binghamton University wrestling team began its dual meet season Sunday, Nov. 22, when they hosted the Journeymen Sprawl & Brawl. The Bearcats split their two matches, losing to No. 24 Michigan State 20-12 before shutting out Davidson 50-0. Junior Anwar Goeres, sophomore Justin Lister, and redshirt freshman Nate Schiedel each went 2-0, with all of them recording one pin in the process. Freshman Jimmy Chase and sophomore Mike McKeever each won by technical fall in the Davidson match.
Binghamton was without senior All-American Josh Patterson during this competition. Patterson was competing in the 44th annual NWCA All-Star Classic at Cal State Fullerton, a dual meet in which some of the country’s highest ranked wrestlers square off against one another. Patterson was defeated by No. 1-ranked Max Askren of Missouri, 14-7.
The Bearcats went 3-1 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals this past Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College. After beginning the day losing to No. 9 Nebraska (27-11), Binghamton defeated Appalachian State (28-16), North Carolina (18-16) and Northern Colorado (28-14).
Patterson, ranked ninth by Intermat in their latest rankings, and Schiedel, combined to go 7-0 for the Bearcats wrestling at 184 and 197 pounds.
With Binghamton trailing North Carolina 16-6 with just three matches left in the dual, Patterson defeated Nick Tenpenny at 184 6-0 to reduce UNC’s lead to 16-9. Schiedel, wrestling at 197, brought the Bearcats to within one point after picking up six points for his team by recording a vital first period pin of 11th ranked Dennis Drury. With the Bearcats down 16-15 and the dual on the line, senior Corey Waite came through, completing the Binghamton comeback with a 7-4 victory at 285, giving Binghamton the win, 18-16.
Patterson started his day with a 14-0 major decision victory of Josh Ihnen of Nebraska at 184 and followed that victory with a first period pin of Appalachian State’s Paul Glover at 197. His 18-0 technical fall victory over Eric Brennan of Northern Colorado at 184 concluded a 4-0 day that improved his record on the season to 9-1.
Schiedel posted an 8-0 major decision victory over Appalachian State’s Carter Downs at 184, followed by two straight first period pins at 197, with the second coming against Northern Colorado’s Ed Matthews.
Redshirt freshman Donnie Vinson went 3-1 at 149 for the Bearcats with major decision victories over Nebraska’s Chris Hacker 11-0 and Northern Colorado’s Justin Gonzales 8-0. Vinson also posted a 7-2 win over Savva Kostis of Appalachian State. His only loss was to No. 11 Nick Stabile of North Carolina 4-0. Vinson is now 13-3 for the season.
Redshirt sophomore Matt Kaylor improved his record to 14-5 for the season after going 3-1 at the duals. Kaylor posted victories at 165 over Nebraska’s Alex Ward 10-5, Appalachian State’s Kyle Blevins 7-5, and Northern Colorado’s Tanner Weiks 9-5.
The Bearcats are now 4-2 in dual meet competitions this season. They are set to be in action again at the Penn State Open this Sunday.
