Two of Binghamton University’s top wrestlers added several more wins to their records over the weekend as BU finished with a 2-1 record at the Ithaca Duals on Saturday.
The Bearcats (9-10) began the meet with a 31-6 loss to Eastern Michigan. Senior Kyle Fried (149 pounds) and sophomore Josh Patterson (174 pounds) notched the only wins for BU.
Binghamton went on to defeat Ithaca 21-12 in the next matchup. Fried continued his winning ways, defeating IC junior John Paxos. Josh Patterson, along with brothers Nate (157 pounds) and Mike (285 pounds) all won their respective matches. Sophomore Brett Nelson and freshman Matt Berretta also added decision wins for the Bearcats.
In its final matchup, Binghamton was able to defeat Mercyhurst 35-13. Both Josh and Nate Patterson logged wins against the Lakers. Josh defeated freshman Josh Shields, while Nate bested sophomore Andy Lamancusa. Berretta added another victory as well, winning his match at 184 pounds by forfeit.
With his three wins, Fried, who is currently ranked 19th in the nation at 149 pounds, brought his record to 11-1. Josh and Nate Patterson, both ranked in the top-30 in their respective weight classes, were impressive in their victories. Josh is 12-3, while Nate is 19-10.
The Bearcats’ next matchup is at East Stroudsburg this Friday. The Warriors (3-9) head into the contest off a 28-10 defeat at the hands of Delaware Valley this past weekend. Senior Sean Carr (141 pounds) is currently 20-6 and is coming off a huge win over Delaware Valley’s Dan Hall, the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Division III. The East Stroudsburg squad also consists of redshirt junior Matt Swallows (133 pounds) who is 17-9 and sophomore Chris Birchler (285 pounds) who is 19-7. Senior Dave Williams (197 pounds) is on a three-match winning streak.
