The Binghamton women’s tennis team will host its home invitational this Saturday and Sunday, inviting Colgate University and Marist College to the West Gym Courts for the Binghamton Invitational.
The Bearcats have started their season on the road with brilliant results. The first two invitational events of the fall were definitely kind to the Bearcats, as they went 16-3 in Bloomsburg and came away with two titles in Quinnipiac. Now with the Bearcats finally home, the weekend figures to be a fine one for women’s tennis.
Over the past two seasons, the host Bearcats have dominated the Binghamton Invitational and have used it as a stepping-stone into the spring. They have sported a combined 42-6 record at the event in singles and doubles dating back to 2005. The way the women have been playing this fall, this year’s event figures to be no different than in previous years.
Freshmen Lauren Bates, Anna Edelman and Yulia Smirnova have all performed at a high level so far this year. Bates, the star of the young season, has been perfect this year in 12 matches and won the ‘B’ singles flight at Quinnipiac. Edelman has dropped just one of her 12 matches so far. Smirnova has also had some nice results this year.
In limited action, sophomores Danyelle Shapiro and Erica Rosenblum, and junior captain Nicole Scarangella all have undefeated records for the year as well. This, coupled with the Bearcats’ traditional dominance at the Binghamton Invitational, points toward bright skies for the weekend. The only question: how will Binghamton’s new players handle the pressure of the home opener? But in light of their outstanding pre-Binghamton careers and strong play so far this year at the collegiate level, the reality is that the players will most definitely be unfazed. Count on a productive weekend for the Bearcats and continuing success from their freshmen trio in their home opener.
The Invitational is set to start at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the West Gym Courts.
