The women’s tennis team continued its trek towards conference play with a 6-1 victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats defeated the Bonnies for the third time in four years, evening their 2006 dual match record to 3-3 in the process.
The depth of the Bearcat lineup continued to shine as sophomore Jenn Naegeli picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, avoiding the comeback drama she provided last weekend against Quinnipiac. Junior Jelena Koprivica picked up a win at the second spot to improve her singles record to 13-7.
The match was a showdown between two improved programs. When the teams faced off in 2003, St. Bonaventure’s Jasmine Jaysingh was defeated at No. 4 singles, and last year she lost at No. 5. But Saturday, Jaysingh’s comeback victory at No. 6 singles was St. Bonaventure’s first singles victory over Binghamton, ever.
The Bearcats won the doubles point yet again, sweeping all three doubles matches. In six dual matches this spring, they’ve won the doubles point three times. Freshman Juliana Ukemi and junior Zeynep Altinay teamed up for a solid 8-2 victory at second doubles to improve to 3-0 as a duo.
Binghamton heads to Niagara next Saturday for a 1 p.m. out-of-conference tilt with the Purple Eagles. America East play begins for the Bearcats on April 2 against Hartford after a three-match spring-break trip to North Carolina.
