The Binghamton women’s soccer team will look to rebound from its conference opening loss on Thursday when it heads to Stony Brook. Playing the Seawolves (5-4-1, 0-1) will be no easy task, as they boast one of the toughest goaltenders in the conference in freshman Marisa Viola.
Stony Brook is coming off a tough 1-0 loss in their conference opener against No. 12 Boston University. The Terriers fired 22 shots against Stony Brook and finally managed to sneak one past the gritty freshman in the 66th minute.
Despite the loss, Viola currently ranks first in the conference in saves per game with 8.1. Expect a defensive battle as Binghamton counters with senior goalkeeper Kristie Bowers, who ranks third in saves per game with 6.3.
The Seawolves’ offensive attack is led by sophomore forward Brooke Barbuto, who is tied for the AE lead in goals scored, with six. Junior middle fielder Tiffany Fasullo has also had a good start, registering nine points on the year.
Stony Brook was ranked eighth of nine in the America East preseason coaches poll, but the young Seawolves have performed much better than was expected.
Binghamton defeated Stony Brook 3-0 last season at West Gym Field, and have not traveled to Stony Brook since joining the America East five seasons ago.
