The Binghamton women’s soccer team has been making home opponents look worse than the VIP section in the back of the Rathskeller.
The Bearcats defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University 3-0 on Friday, extending their unbeaten-at-home streak to three games. The win marks the second consecutive shutout posted by the Bearcats, after besting Wagner 4-0 last Sunday.
The Bearcats overwhelmed the Knights throughout the entire game, posting 17 shots to FDU’s six. It was the first time since the 2000 season that Binghamton has posted back-to-back shutouts while scoring at least seven goals in those games. The team has employed a steady balance of explosive offense and gritty defense to string together these wins.
Junior forward Kim Povill led the charge against FDU, contributing two goals. Povill dominated the opposition, scoring on a breakaway in the first half to put the Bearcats up 1-0, and then again with thirty minutes left in the second half, launching a shot from nearly midfield, which nicked the post and floated into the net.
“Overall, I am proud of our team,” Povill said. The modest forward didn’t speak about her own success in the game but added, “… we all came together today and I’m looking forward to more wins.”
To complete the scoring, Betsy Harris placed a corner kick in between several defenders, which allowed Tricia Reed to methodically head the ball into the net.
“It was our best game yet,” said head coach Jeff Leightman. Although Leightman was “disappointed” in the team’s previous blowout of Wagner, he was satisfied with their win on Friday.
“We did a great job of moving the ball,” Leightman said. “They had to chase us the entire game.”
Senior goalkeeper Kristie Bowers was a key ingredient to the team’s success on Friday as well; Bowers saved four shots for her second straight shutout.
“It was a great team effort,” Bowers said.
The Bearcats headed to Long Island on Sunday to try to extend their winning streak against the Long Island University Blackbirds.
The game was marked by an intense defensive struggle, with the long goal being scored on a header from LIU’s Tarisa Davis in the game’s 62nd minute.
Bowers made five saves in the contest. The win extends LIU’s unbeaten-at-home streak to 20 games (19-0-1).
The Bearcats have one more non-conference match-up on Thursday before starting America East play this Sunday. They will look to work out whatever problems still remain against a Canisius team that upset them last season.
“I think we are ready for conference play,” Bowers said.
Kickoff for the Bearcats’ final non-conference game against Canisius is set for 4 p.m. Thursday at West Gym Field.
