Binghamton University women’s lacrosse stormed Temple on Friday, notching its first win of the season, 16-11.

Head coach Tony Zostant was pleased with the victory over the Atlantic 10 champions.

“It was a great performance by our team; I’m very pleased at both ends of the field. We were very poised,” Zostant said, according a Binghamton University press release. “It’s a great win for our program. I can’t say enough about our defense and how we played.”

The Bearcats started off strong with a 3-1 lead against Temple with 12:20 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Lisa Illig got things rolling for the Bearcats with a free-position goal less than seven minutes into the game. Temple answered back three minutes later with an FP goal of their own, tying the game before sophomores Kate Tesi and Beth Moore put in a goal apiece.

Temple continued to fight back, pouring in three back-to-back goals and taking the lead before BU sophomore Ali Castiglie netted a goal to tie the game 4-4. Nineteen seconds later Temple again took the lead, 5-4, with 5:39 remaining in the first. In the last five minutes the Bearcats pulled ahead, with Moore and freshman Emily Thon putting in a goal apiece, ending the half 6-5.

The Bearcats continued to widen the gap with nine straight goals in 12 minutes, putting the score at 15-5. Temple tried to go on a rally of its own, but only got as far as a 6-1 run in the remaining minutes.

Moore led the match with four goals, while Illig and Castiglie had three goals apiece. Goalkeeper sophomore Lauren Scott made a total of 14 saves. Temple’s 21 turnovers really helped the Bearcats clinch the match. The Owls, however, picked up a total of 16 groundballs.

The Bearcats host St. Bonaventure today at 4 p.m.
