School may not have been in session last week, but the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team was busy, winning two of its last three contests.

Back-to-back wins against Iona and American set a milestone for the young program, marking the first winning streak in team history.

“Experiencing the back-to-back wins as an upperclassman was amazing,” said junior midfielder Anna Riordan. “It shows all the hard work we’ve been putting in over the years is really starting to pay off.”

The first victory was a 12-11 defeat over Iona, during a week long Spring Fling tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla. Sophomore midfielder Kristen Marsjanik provided last-second heroics for the Bearcats, picking up a goal in the closing seconds and sending Binghamton into the win column for the first time this season.

“I have never scored a goal that meant that much,” Marsjanik said. “It was truly an awesome feeling.”

Wednesday saw the Bearcats notch another win, picking up a 12-10 victory over American University.

Binghamton raced to a 10-1 lead, but defensive woes almost let the game slip away when American cut the deficit to one in the closing minute.

“For the remainder of the season we want to play more consistently and finish the whole 60 minutes,” said junior tri-captain Lauren Chemotti.

Danielle Edwards put forth a strong offensive performance for Binghamton in the win, tying a school record with six goals, including the game sealer with 22 seconds remaining. Sophomore midfielder Leanne Musso and junior attack Heather Grose also had impressive afternoons, tallying three and two goals, respectively, while senior tri-captain Lauren Wetherell provided a game-high five assists.

Binghamton’s hot streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, however, as they fell to Canisius 16-8. Binghamton trailed during most of the contest, but, despite being down 15-3 at one point, finished strong, recording five of the game’s last six goals.

Marsjanik, Riordan and Wetherell provided the offensive spark for the Bearcats, each netting two goals. Freshmen Lindsay Feller and Julia Demuth also got in on the action, scoring one goal a piece.

Sophomore goaltender Sandra Alvarez made 15 saves in just her second collegiate start, but it was not enough to hold back a Canisius team that featured two six-goal scorers and outshot Binghamton 42-24.

The Bearcats will look to improve upon their 2-4 record today when they travel to Long Island University.
