The seniors stepped up for the Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team on Senior Night, Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the Bearcats (4-10, 0-5 AE) fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves, 18-12, at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Senior captain Leanne Musso led the way for BU, scoring a team-high of three goals and extending her team-leading total to 24.
With three goals in the final two games of the season, Musso would put herself into third place on the single-season goal scoring list, passing Heather Gross’ and Lauren Wetherell’s 2004 totals but remaining behind Becky Green’s 2004 total of 30 and Danielle Edwards’s 2005 total of 33.
Binghamton senior Kristen Marsjanik also left her mark on the field, scoring only her second goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper Sandra Alvarez started between the pipes and recorded eight saves in 45 minutes before being subbed out for freshman Lauren Scott.
As successful as the BU seniors were, it was not enough to stop Stony Brook (6-6, 1-4) from getting its first America East win of the season. The Seawolves were up 9-8, but with 20 minutes left in the second half, Stony Brook began a 7-0 run and never looked back.
Four Binghamton freshmen scored, making it the 14th game this season in which four freshman scored. In this instance, it was team points leader Ali Castiglie along with Lisa Illig, Kate Concialdi and Beth Moore.
Seawolves junior midfielder Kaitlin Leggio and senior attack Diana Caroleo combined for 17 points to lead the Seawolves. Leggio, the 2007 AE Player of the Year, had three goals and six assists for a game-high nine points. Stony Brook freshman Melissa Cook added six points.
The game marks the Bearcats’ 27th straight AE loss, a streak that dates back to 2004.
The team faces its last conference opponent of the season this Saturday when it heads to Burlington, Vt., to take on the Vermont Catamounts, the only AE opponent BU has ever defeated.
