If they could have erased the last 70 seconds of the first half, maybe the outcome would have been different. Stony Brook scored three goals during that stretch, taking a six-goal lead into the locker room en route to a 17-8 win over the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team.

The final score didn’t accurately reflect how much heart the Bearcats played with, though, especially during the first 20 minutes. Despite trailing from the onset, Binghamton battled back ferociously, cutting the deficit to one after senior midfielder Lauren Wetherell found the back of the net 19 minutes in.

Stony Brook (5-3, 1-1 AE) outshot Binghamton (3-7, 0-1 AE) 20-9 in the first half, but sophomore goaltender Sandra Alvarez kept the game within reach, making 10 early saves.

“Sandra played exceptionally for us today,” said head coach Emily Edmonston. “I patted her on the back and told her she did her job well today.”

But eventually Stony Brook’s relentless attack was too much for Alvarez to handle. The Seawolves doubled their 6-3 lead in the last 1:10 of the first half and never looked back.

“There was not a lot [Alvarez] could do on some of those goals,” Edmonston said.

Stony Brook’s momentum would carry over into the second half, as the Seawolves netted six of the first seven goals. In the end, eight different Seawolves found the back of the cage and they outshot the Bearcats 34-16.

“We got out-hustled today,” Edmonston said. “We did not do the simple things that we need to get done to win.”

Junior attack Danielle Edwards led the way offensively for Binghamton, tallying three goals and one assist. Midfielders Leanne Musso, Julia Demuth and Wetherell also got in on the action, registering two points apiece with a goal and an assist.

The Bearcats will look to get back on track tomorrow at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game at Niagara.
