Binghamton University welcomes a new member to the community this semester with the arrival of new Vice President for Student Affairs Brian T. Rose.
Rose was the vice president of Student Affairs at Rutgers University through the fall 2007 semester, where he made extensive progress improving the condition of student life.
Rose’s efforts at Rutgers include the unification of the disabled student community. After hearing many complaints from disabled students about the lack of resources available to them on campus, Rose proposed and eventually supervised the development of a central, full-time office for students with disabilities.
Rutgers University’s recent renovation of their system for assigning student identification numbers was also a change initiated by Rose. Rose objected to the original system, which used social security numbers as default student identification numbers.
‘As more services were based on the Internet, I was hearing from many students that were concerned with their security,’ said Rose of his motivation for the approximately $1 million change.
Rose also helped improve student fee distribution, adding more flexible use of funds and a system for student input, according to Kosi Remy, president of the Rutgers University College Council.
As the vice president for Student Affairs at Binghamton University, Rose will have similar opportunities to reform student life based on feedback from members of the campus community.
‘I need to come to understand Binghamton in a lot more detail,’ said Rose of his plans for the coming weeks.
Rose has spent the last several weeks speaking with faculty and staff, and will now begin speaking to students and student organizations about the current state of student life at BU.
‘I expect to hear some common themes soon,’ said Rose.
Rose emphasized that he is excited and optimistic about his future at the University.
‘I’m very impressed with community here, and I look forward to working with all of the students, faculty and staff,’ he said.
