Binghamton University will have a new vice president for Student Affairs this January, as interim VPSA Lloyd Howe will be replaced by Brian Rose. Rose, who is currently serving as the associate vice president for Student Affairs at Rutgers, will step into Howe’s position at the beginning of next semester.

Rose, who has held several positions at Rutgers ‘ including director of compliance, student policy and judicial affairs ‘ is excited to work at what he deems a distinguished institution.

‘I am thrilled to be coming to BU,’ Rose said. ‘ First and foremost, the University exudes confidence in its mission, growth and excellence. It is exciting to be a part of an institution with those qualities.’

Rose is meeting this change of scenery with excitement.

‘It is also a new stage in my career, the chance to take on new challenges and a new community for myself and my family,’ Rose said. ‘All of these aspects make this an exciting time for me.’

The division of Student Affairs is responsible for student enrollment and retention, among other things. As VPSA, Rose will head the department and believes his experience will be a valuable asset.

‘I’ve spent nearly 17 years working at a large, complex, diverse, public research institution,’ Rose said. ‘In various capacities, I’ve had to handle almost any kind of student problem imaginable and have led major change in several different student services areas. I’m certainly confident that I’m ready to take on this new challenge successfully.’

Howe, who will serve until Rose takes office on Jan. 7, said he has enjoyed his time in office.

‘It’s always a challenge to do something different at a different level,’ Howe said. ‘However, I have had a lot of support from the within the division and from outside the division and it has made the transition smooth.’

Howe remains optimistic that Rose will serve both the administration and the student population well.

‘I think he will do a very good job,’ Howe said. ‘I think he is very student-oriented. He seems to be a person that will be easy to work with and he seems to be someone who is goal-oriented and has a vision for the University.’
