The spring season for track and field is set to begin tomorrow at the Dick Shea Open, hosted by Army. In the America East coaches’ poll, both the Binghamton men’s and women’s teams were voted to place fourth, the same place they took in the indoor season championships.
‘The goal for our men’s and women’s teams are to both finish in the top three,’ said coach Mike Thompson. ‘We were supposed to be fifth at indoor and we surpassed that ‘ you never know.’
It’s spring, love is in the air. If that love is anywhere less than 18 feet off the ground, senior pole-vaulter Rory Quiller will surely grab it. Quiller concluded a stellar indoor season for the team by placing second in the nation. Although Quiller will be going for another trip to the NCAA’s in the spring, he is not the only Bearcat to watch.
Sophomore sensation Kim Williams finished her indoor season with an impressive fifth place in the 200-meter dash at this year’s ECAC championships. Williams was part of the 4×4 team that placed 11th in the preliminaries at the ECACs, just missing a trip to the finals, and also set a school record for the 55-meter dash during this past indoor season.
Another Bearcat to keep an eye out for is sophomore long distance runner Katie Radzik. Radzik took some first place finishes during the regular season and a second place finish in the America East championships. She placed 14th at the ECACs, but her time was 13 seconds better than at her previous meet.
Sophomore Jimmy Massar is another person to watch out for this spring. The Johnson City native broke and rebroke school records in the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the America East championships in February.
After a strong winter season, the Bearcats enter spring with even higher aspirations.
