Popular ’90s rock band Third Eye Blind made a stop at Magic City Music Hall last Sunday night as part of their one month tour to promote the group’s new album Out of the Vein.
After a three-year recording hiatus, the band vowed to finish their fourth album this year. The album will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the band’s self-titled debut album in 1997, which established the group’s rock icon status, selling 6 million copies. The group’s career started out in the ’90s in the San Francisco club scene, where they reportedly slept on various floors before hitting it big with their first album, which included hits like ‘Graduate,’ ‘How’s it Gonna Be’ and ‘Semi-Charmed Life.’
The San Francisco quartet, led by front man Stephan Jenkins, played an hour and a half-long set that included songs off the new album such as ‘Summer Town’ and ‘Don’t Like Me Now,’ as well as several old favorites.
The Upwelling, a New York City-based rock trio who is accompanying Third Eye Blind on their spring tour, opened the show with a short but memorable set.
Although the first half of Third Eye Blind’s performance was decidedly slower and less lively than the second half, it took no time for the crowd to ‘warm up.’ The night was marked by the intense muggy heat that lingered in the crowded room filled with BU students who loved the group in high school and a new crop of young fans who seemed to sing along with ease.
The middle of the show included an acoustic set in which the group brought a couch onto the stage and played for the audience in the same way that they practice, setting a more intimate tone.
The group finished out its set with 10-minute jam versions of ‘Jumper’ and ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ that had the sweltering pit of viewers bouncing around and wailing along to the familiar lyrics, leading into a three-song encore that included ‘Slow Motion,’ ‘How’s it Gonna Be’ and ‘God of Wine.’
