The Binghamton men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to the pool with a successful tri-meet against the Lafayette Leopards and conference rival Stony Brook Seawolves, and a dual meet against the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.
The men’s team performed impressively in its final home meet against Lafayette and Stony Brook. Led by seniors Brian Koizim, Trevor Stone and David Holmes, the men’s team captured both relays and a total of 12 of the 16 individual events en route to a dominating performance on senior day at the Patricia Saunders Aquatic Center.
Holmes set a new school and pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle and also captured the 50 yard-freestyle. Koizim took the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events while Stone took the 100 and 200-yard fly.
“Our senior men really wanted to put an exclamation point on their home careers, and they really did,” said head coach Sean Clark. “It was a solid win.”
The future of men’s team was also on display with impressive performances by sophomores Brenno Varanda, Brian Koralewski, as well as by sophomore Ryan Graham on the diving board.
The women’s team earned a split decision in the tri-meet defeating the Seawolves, but came up short against the Leopards.
The Bearcats handily defeated Stony Brook, winning 11 individual events and both relays. Binghamton was once again led by its freshmen due, Allyce Brand and Lindsay Wright, as well sophomore Aleksandra Grubic. Brand finished with three second place finishes while Wright and Grubic both earned a pair of third place finishes.
“Our women really deserved this win against Stony Brook today,” Clark said. “It wasn’t easy, but they pulled together and did what they needed to do.”
In the dual meet against St. Bonaventure, the men’s team posted another impressive performance defeating the Bonnies 141.5-101.5, while the women fell 165-75.
The men dominated behind Holmes, who once again won three events propelling the Bearcats to victory. Holmes proved unstoppable, again setting pool records in both the 200 fly and 500 freestyle in the Reilly Center Pool at St. Bonaventure.
Co-captain Koizim and Varanda were dual-event winners, helping to improve the Bearcats record in dual meets this season to 6-2. Not to be outdone was Ryan Graham, who also was a dual-event winner on the boards.
“This was our biggest dual meet victory of the season so far for the men’s team,” Clark said. “We matched up well against them and had to swim tough to get the places we needed. Our big horses pulled us through another close one.”
The women’s team also put up a solid performance, despite feeling the fatigue of a long season. Grubic place second in the 50-yard freestyle while junior Nicole Sweeney placed third in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Bearcats also received another honor as senior Holmes once again captured the America East Swimming Performer of the Week honors. This marks the third time this season and the eleventh time in Holmes’ career that he has earned the honor. Holmes dominated his last two meets, winning all five of his individual events.
“We’ve asked a lot from David in the last two meets,” Clark said. “He is not a distance swimmer, but he can do it.” Holmes finished an impressive career at BU, and along with senior co-captains Trevor Stone and Brian Koizim will be sorely missed.
The men’s and women’s team finish in a tri-meet with Colgate and University of Massachusetts. This has been a matchup that coach Clark has looked forward to, matching him against his alma mater. Wins would be huge for both teams as they hope to enter conference tournaments riding high.
