While walking through any college campus, the style of its students becomes apparent. Usually this style can be summed up in one word — sweats.
Casual has been taken to a whole new level when wearing pajama pants is socially acceptable outside of the dorm. For students who wear pajamas to class, wearing a pair of jeans is considered “dressing up.” This college trend has become a norm throughout many campuses.
Greg O’Brien, a senior majoring in political science who was sporting pajamas at the Glenn G. Bartle Library, said, “I wear sweats because they’re comfy and I study better when I’m comfortable.”
Even the brutal temperatures of Binghamton are not enough to stop some students from dressing in easy-to-wear summer items, such as basketball shorts and flip-flops.
“I do it because I’m too lazy to put on jeans and find socks to wear,” O’Brien said.
Although this trend may seem a bit sloppy, students provide a logic behind their fashion decisions.
Jake Carro, a junior majoring in management, stated his reasons for why he favors wearing sweats around campus.
“I usually schedule my classes in large blocks, so if I’m sitting for an extended period of time I want to be as comfortable as possible,” Carro explained.
There’s no doubt that comfort is a significant factor when college students decide on what to wear. Yet this should not prevent students from getting a simple upgrade of their attire.
Waking up for an 8:30 a.m. class is already enough to ask of any college student, let alone asking them to find a matching outfit to wear.
For some guys, this means slapping together whatever clothes they can find before rushing out the door to class and hoping that it’s clean. With a few slight changes, though, and a small number of quick and painless alterations, one can neaten their look. With these easy style pointers, it may be time to put your Bearcat hoodie aside.
Anyone hesitant about a wardrobe adjustment may be glad to hear its perks — including more attention from the fairer sex.
Tips for style change:
1. Show off your figure
Good news, boys: going to the beach isn’t the only way to expose the results of weight lifting and abdominal exercises. All the hours spent working out at the gym can even be exposed with clothes on. Items such as a button-up shirt compliment one’s physique better than formless and baggy clothes. Plaid, collared shirts with sleeves rolled up to the elbows can create a nicer casual look than the everyday sweatshirt. Jeans or slim-fitting khakis can also show off a tall and lean figure.
2. Grab a time piece
Although a watch isn’t necessary to keep track of time because of cell phones, it can help by adding a sophisticated edge to any outfit.
3. Change up your footwear
Instead of wearing running shoes or Adidas flip-flops to class, a change of style, such as desert boots, will provide a unique twist without falling short on the comfort factor.
4. Get your hair done
A simple haircut is another small change that serves to create a whole new look. Instead of wearing a baseball cap to hide a potentially good hairstyle, add some product to flatter its natural look.
5. Fold your laundry
When you actually decide to do your laundry, make sure to fold it right away and not leave it in the hamper. Leaving it there for extended periods of time will cause wrinkles and further enhance your sloppy appearance.
With just a few minor alterations, the smallest change can give any young man a positive transformation.
