While many students spent Super Bowl Sunday in front of big-screen televisions, guzzling beer and pizza in true American style, some decided to refrain from watching the biggest sporting event of the season in favor of less rowdy recreational activities.
“I don’t like football,” said Deanna Cheng, a senior management major. “I’ll probably watch another channel or do homework.”
Freshman Sara Haugli decided to play sports instead of watching them on Super Bowl weekend, getting more physical activity outside than she could on her couch.
“I watched the Super Bowl when I lived in Illinois and it was just about partying,” she said. “This weekend my friends and I decided to go snowboarding.”
Kristin Lau, a junior management major, spent the afternoon at Tri-Cities Opera.
“I saw ‘Magic Flute’ by Mozart with my friend,” she said. “We had a wonderful time.”
Despite the hype surrounding the game, some students treated this Sunday like any other night.
“I’ll probably catch a few minutes of the game and then go on doing whatever I was doing: hanging out with my friends, catching a movie, surfing the net, the usual,” said John Lee.
Freshman Katie O’Rourke didn’t have the opportunity to party during the game. She spent the day working at a pizza restaurant.
“It was obviously crazy because of the Super Bowl,” she said. “A lot more people worked, so it was fun.”
For the past few weeks, football fans have been eagerly awaiting and discussing the big game, but some students didn’t share in their enthusiasm and were even annoyed by it.
“Sometimes I think people get too caught into it,” said Steve Cormier. “It can be pretty annoying that so much talk is going on about one game. It’s pretty ridiculous if you think about it.”
“I might watch the game,” Cormier added, “but I don’t really care who wins. It doesn’t affect me in any way.”
Ellanna Gonzelleze believes that some people just use the Super Bowl as an excuse to “drink and have good time.”
Still, millions of Americans watch the Super Bowl every year, and although some students chose to refrain from watching this Sunday, most said that the Super Bowl is worth getting excited over.
“I think people watch it because it’s the event to watch and the commercials are pretty cool,” said Wayne Chiu.
Lee agreed.
“It’s a good reason to celebrate,” he said. “I won’t necessarily watch it, but I’ll have a drink with my friends.”
