Pipe Dream is commemorating six decades of serving the Binghamton University community. It started in the fall of 1946 as “The Colonial News,” a densely-packed four-page digest of the goings on of Triple Cities College.

Over the years, we’ve grown and changed, but one thing has remained constant: for better or for worse, we’ve never had an adviser. Today, plenty of formats and a name later, we’re still standing as a unique tribute to the power of motivated, hard-working students.

So throughout this year, look for special segments that highlight the evolution of this newspaper and the campus it’s covered. In this issue, for example, you’ll find “Back in the day,” where we take a page out of our archives and a look at a blast from BU’s past. As the year goes on, we’ll reveal more of these long-forgotten pieces of history.

We’ve also brought back “Police Watch.” One of our most popular features, it details the sometimes dreary but more often outlandishly ridiculous criminal activities (and generally bad behavior) of our peers, as told by Binghamton’s New York State University Police. And look out for our Friday issues, where you can find a revamped Release, our arts and lifestyle supplement that will help you find out what’s going on on campus and beyond. From music to movies to the State Street bars, Release has it.

Finally, we’re kicking off our 60th anniversary with a new, freshly designed Web site. Again, as the year goes on, watch for new features and exclusive online-only content that will take full advantage of the power of the Web.

So open the year’s first issue and take a look at what we’ve got. But keep reading in the weeks to come and see what we’re working hard to be: your useful, one-stop source for news from here on campus and around the world.
