After getting swept by Maine in a doubleheader Saturday by a combined score of 13-3, the Binghamton softball team bounced back Sunday to beat the Black Bears, 5-4, and close out its season with a win at East Gym Complex.

With the Bearcats trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, senior outfielder Stephanie Woodcock hit her second home run of the year, a three-run shot to put the Bearcats up by two.

Woodcock, who had 4 RBIs on the day, had also given Binghamton the lead in the bottom of the second on a single.

Maine took its 2-1 lead that Woodcock’s home run eliminated in the top of the third on senior first baseman and cleanup hitter Kristie Hawkin’s 2-RBI double.

Binghamton added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 5-2, and Bearcat starting pitcher Cyrilla Suker was able to extinguish a two-run Black Bear rally in the seventh, as Hawkins popped up to second baseman Ashley Waters, representing the tying run at the plate.

On Saturday, a pair of Maine underclassmen starting pitchers, freshman Christine McGivney and sophomore Jenn Balent, stifled Binghamton’s bats all day, with McGivney allowing just four hits as Maine won the first game, 8-1, and Balent letting up seven hits in a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

Binghamton also gave the Black Bears some help, committing five errors in each game, making all five runs Maine scored in the nightcap unearned.

After Binghamton cut the Maine lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on senior catcher Christina Quijano’s RBI-single, the Black Bears answered in grand fashion the next frame, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth.

McGivney finished with eight strikeouts and just one walk in the 8-1 win.

The Black Bears jumped ahead early in the second game, scoring one in the first and three in the third. Senior left fielder Tara Vilardo was 3-for-4 and senior catcher Elizabeth Foltz was 3-for-4.

Binghamton wouldn’t get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning, when junior outfielder Liz Sequeira came around on an error. Senior catcher Mia Bieman’s double later in the inning plated the second Bearcat run.

Maine responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh on three Bearcat errors and Binghamton loaded the bases in the bottom half, but was unable to score, falling by a final of 5-2.
