This past weekend was supposed to be the time for the Binghamton softball team to turn things around. A three-game set scheduled against their conference rival, the Albany Great Danes, seeded fifth in the conference, was going to be a chance for the Bearcats, who were 1-7 at the time, to rise a few spots in the America East, where the bottom half of the conference is within just a few games of each other.

But the Bearcats struggled this weekend as they dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader (8-4 and 4-2), while Sunday’s game was canceled due to the snowstorm that blew through the area.

Things are not looking good, as softball now finds itself nowhere near the .500 mark (4-21, 1-9 and eighth in AE), having allowed Albany to separate from the bottom half of the America East (22-11, 5-5 and fifth in AE), but there’s still the chance to resuscitate this season with a strong finish.

The Bearcats will play nothing but conference games over the next week, traveling to Stony Brook (20-12, 7-3 and third in AE) this weekend for a three-game set, then hosting UMBC (26-10, 9-2 and first in AE) for a midweek doubleheader and finally traveling to Vermont (9-22, 2-9 and seventh in AE) next weekend.

With eight conference games in the next nine days, Binghamton can potentially find itself at 9-9 in the AE. It will be a tough task to accomplish, but the Bearcats can always rally behind the inspirational words of John Belushi:

‘Over? Did you say ‘over’? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the going gets tough ‘ the tough get going! Who’s with me? Let’s go!’

This weekend’s softball games will be held at noon tomorrow and Sunday. Come out and let the Seawolves know that they are playing in the backyard of the Bearcats.
