The victory was methodical and dominant for Stony Brook this weekend as the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team fell behind early and never recovered. The Seawolves powered to a 6-1 start to open the game and never looked back, cruising to a 21-7 win.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 0-5.
The BU defense allowed a total of 42 shots on goal, while the offense managed just 17. The porous defense caused many problems for Sandra Alvarez in goal, who did manage to fend off 20 of Stony Brook’s shots.
‘We need to stay consistent,’ said head coach Emily Edmonston. ‘Once they made their run, we got kind of down and were never really able to recover.’
The Bearcats got within three after freshmen Kate Gromatsky and Danielle Edwards netted a pair of goals in the first half, bringing the score to 6-3. They would never get closer than that as Stony Brook ran off six of the last seven goals of the first half to open up a 12-4 advantage.
Stony Brook is off to an impressive start this season, sporting a 7-1 record. They came in off an 18-7 win over Siena; Siena defeated Binghamton earlier this season 18-11.
Edwards and Gromatsky each found the back of the net twice in a losing effort for the Bearcats. Edwards has now scored in a team-best five consecutive games. The senior star leads the team with 12 points this season, including 10 goals.
The Bearcats have a busy upcoming schedule. The team visits Marist today at 4 p.m.; they will then return to Vestal for their home opener against conference foe Albany on Saturday, March 31.
