Here’s a different spin on Ryan’s Fantasy Corner this week. In the NFL, some teams are just ripe with fantasy gold, while others you typically shy away from. It often doesn’t matter whether these teams are good or bad; all that matters is the situation regarding intangible fantasy factors, such as playing time, coaches’ moods, players’ attitudes, who has the hot hand, etc. From what I can tell, based on consistency, fantasy quality and player quantity, here are the three best and the three worst NFL teams for a fantasy football player to be on.

BEST

1.Green Bay Packers

For the past couple of years, the Packers have churned out fantasy gold like no other team. Aaron Rodgers is the obvious gem there, but he brings the level of play of his entire team up. Greg Jennings, though he still underachieves, is a strong starter, while journeyman Donald Driver still puts up numbers at his age. Rodgers has also gotten tight end Jermichael Finley involved, turning him into everybody’s favorite TE sleeper of 2010. Finally, Ryan Grant was, in my opinion, the most consistent fantasy running back I’ve ever had; he usually didn’t give you 20-point weeks, but he always gave you at least 10 to 12 points, which is saying a lot. He won’t return this season, but Brandon Jackson can put up comparable numbers. Not to mention the Packers’ defense being a very strong play in all formats. This team is a fantasy moneymaker.

2.Houston Texans

Matt Schaub was phenomenal last year, leading the NFL in passing yards, and we all know Andre Johnson was the top receiver. Also, don’t forget that Owen Daniels would have been a top-three tight end if he hadn’t torn his ACL mid-season. But this year, Kevin Walter has (finally) emerged and Jacoby Jones has come up as well at the receiver slot, not to mention running back Arian Foster’s otherworldly Week 1 performance. The Texans’ ‘D’ is also a popular waiver wire flier lately, so this team is primed to be a top fantasy achiever this year.

3.Indianapolis Colts

It begins with Peyton Manning, of course, but it doesn’t end there. He made Reggie Wayne a top-10-caliber receiver, made young stars out of Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, and made Dallas Clark the best tight end in the game last year. While they didn’t run the ball much, Joseph Addai has been a solid RB2/RB3 solely for his goal-line touchdown carries. The key is consistency, and while there weren’t necessarily stellar numbers from every single one each week, they are all worth owning without a doubt.

WORST

1.Buffalo Bills

Yes, I did that to my hometown guys. It always begins at quarterback, and Trent Edwards is as anemic as they come. If Lee Evans had a great QB throwing it to him, he would be huge on the wide receiver radar. Before the NFL draft, fantasy owners watched carefully where the dynamic C.J. Spiller would land, and he landed in the worst possible place ‘ a team that already had two running backs, one who started in 2009 and the other who started in 2008. Fred Jackson had a couple good games last year and he’s a great athlete, but no consistency. Marshawn Lynch was a touchdown beast at times in his prime, but no consistency. The fact of the matter is that no matter how much talent you may have in one guy, it can all be wasted by a situation like this. Starting a Bill in your fantasy lineup is never a good idea; everyone that started C.J. Spiller amidst all the excitement during Week 1 got burned for that mistake. Get used to it.

2.New Orleans Saints

What? I must be kidding, right? Yes, Drew Brees is a top QB, and many might say the situation here is very similar to that of the Colts. So what’s the difference? Again, it’s consistency. How many of you have owned Pierre Thomas, Marques Colston, Reggie Bush, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore, Jeremy Shockey, or anyone else that made you absolutely love them for three weeks of the season and hate them for the other 11 weeks? It is nerve-racking to start anyone but Brees on this team, as they could just as easily break off 20 points or lay a goose egg.

3.Seattle Seahawks

Would you even think about starting ANY of these guys? I was high on Justin Forsett, but they’re not using him enough. Besides Forsett, this entire team is swimming with mediocrity, and while they may be able to win a football game here or there, it’s been a while since any one of these players was worthy of fantasy consideration. No one puts up nearly enough numbers to warrant consideration, not on offense or on defense. Maybe new coaching changes that eventually, but up to this point, the Seahawks are another team to avoid in Fantasyland.
