This Saturday was the final inseason matchup for Binghamton University’s Devils rugby team, and the stage couldn’t have been better set. The field was muddy and torn to bits, the sky was gray and the teams were full of hatred for one another, as the Brockport Doggies came to town to take on the BU Devils.

Brockport won 5-0, but the one-sidedness of the score had little to do with the exchanging of punishing blows on the field. Mud-filled faces wrenched in pain and thunderous thuds resulting from bodies being thrown together with reckless abandon told the true story of the contest.

For the senior class, it was a bitter defeat to finish off a rugby career with. Being blanked on the scoreboard on your home field against your rival is by no means how an athlete dreams of walking away. The entire season was a mix of ups and downs, as the Devils went through a rebuilding process this season. Although this season may not have been as successful as the previous year’s campaign, the Devil upperclassmen can rest assured that they gave every ounce of effort their bodies would allow, and they have trained the next generation to carry on the club name and to continue to rise in the ranks throughout their years in Binghamton.
