Former leading scorer and All-Conference selection Dani Raske has been released from the Binghamton University women’s soccer team.
Head coach Sarah McClellan declined to discuss the exact reason for the dismissal. She stated that it was not a behavioral issue, but said that Raske was “not a good fit.”
“Our program is moving in a different direction,” McClellan said.
After sitting out as an injury redshirt during her first year of school, Raske became a big part of the Bearcats’ offense during her first year of play. She started all 18 games at various positions and led the team in goals (seven) and points (19). She also tied for the team lead in assists with five and added three game-winning goals that year.
For her performance, she was awarded with an America East All-Conference Second-Team nod and an All-Rookie selection as well. She also made the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll each of her first two years.
During her second season of play, she wasn’t relied on to score as she was in her first year, so she returned to the back position.
“She’s a true outside back,” McClellan said in September. “So she only played forward for us because we were lacking forwards.”
Raske finished the 2009 campaign with a goal and two assists, starting in 13 of 18 games. Binghamton finished as America East championship runner-up with its best conference win percentage in the history of the program.
“I wish the girls the best of luck and I hope they have a great season next fall,” Raske said.
