Binghamton University’s Rory Quiller could become the fourth athlete in Binghamton history to attend the Olympics.
Quiller, a 23-year-old MBA Student and 6-foot-4-inch BU pole vaulter, has reached the provisional mark necessary to attend the 2008 United States Track and Field Olympic Team Trials, scheduled to be held from June 27 through July 6 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
If Quiller were to make the trials and finish in the top three, he would represent the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Quiller met the provisional height of 18-0 Ã.ý at the season-opening Cornell Indoor Relays in December.
However, that jump does not guarantee him a spot in the trials. The top 24 pole vaulters who meet or exceed the provisional mark may attend the trials. Thus, if 24 others were to jump higher than Quiller, he would not attend.
The only way to guarantee a spot at the trials would be to reach the automatic mark of 18-8, but Quiller does not think that will be necessary.
“There’s not a whole flood of people who have jumped higher,” he said. “The lowest right now I could be is probably 10th.”
Quiller said he hopes to reach a height of 18-3 in upcoming meets to increase his chances of attending the trials.
