Which one of the three following situations is incorrect?
1. Michael Strahan missed all of the preseason and is no longer the best defensive linemen on the New York Football Giants.
2. The Kansas City Chiefs’ Larry Johnson skipped the preseason and is having a terrible year.
3. Binghamton University’s Rory Quiller only practiced his new pole-vaulting method once before the first meet of the year and he failed to place at the Cornell Invitational.
If you guessed that Rory Quiller did not place at the Cornell Invitational as being wrong, you would be absolutely right. In fact, Quiller placed first and already qualified for the national tournament after the first meet of the season.
‘It was the first time he ever competed from the nine-stride approach,’ said BU track and field coach Mike Thompson. ‘[Quiller’s] chance for improvements are huge, he only had one practice.’
Quiller was a bright spot as always, tying his own school record of 18 1/2. But Binghamton junior Dan Walker actually broke a three-year-old school record in the 60-meter dash. Walker ran a 7.04, breaking Joe Flucus’ record of 7.09. Walker, as his surname suggests, was a walk-on his freshman year. Thompson had nothing but praise for Walker, saying that he was ‘disciplined, hard working and consistent.’ This is the second consecutive season the Bearcats have broken a record in their first meet of the season.
One of last year’s record breakers, Keisha Short, showed great potential for this season as she placed third in the 300-meter dash. Fellow sprinter Dayna Johnson took tops in her race, the 500-meter dash, with time of 1:17.
‘It’s a good time, it’s ahead of where she’s ever been at this time,’ Thompson said.
The other top finisher on the female side was Carly Gross, with a second-place pole vault finish. She leaped 11 1, breaking a personal record. Consistent point-getter Kim Williams made the finals in her race, but was pulled due to soreness in her hamstring.
‘It’s nothing to write about,’ Thompson said. ‘We were just playing it safe.’
Binghamton sophomore long-jumper Kevin Ralston qualified for the post season IC4A meet with a jump of 23 2 3/4.
All in all, it was a great start for Binghamton.
‘It was the best showing we’ve ever had at this meet; this team has an exceptional attitude,’ Thompson said. ‘People will be place winners at the conference meet.’
