AUG. 10, 8:00 p.m. — Multiple items were reported stolen from the men’s soccer locker room in the West Gym. Campus police wouldn’t say what was stolen, but maintain they are following up on promising leads.
AUG. 13, 11:23 p.m. — A cleaner reported that an unknown vandal had damaged two chairs in Lecture Hall 10. The desktops had been ripped off; the damage was estimated at around $150. Police have no suspects.
AUG. 17, 1:54 a.m. — A staffer in the Fine Arts Building reported a ceiling projector stolen. A few phone calls quickly determined that the projector had in fact been removed by campus audiovisual staff to prevent damage from ongoing renovation in its original location. The investigation was closed.
AUG. 22, 1:04 a.m. — Binghamton’s State University Police received a call saying that a male BU student was carrying a sign he had stolen from Man-Nam Korean Restaurant, in the Vestal Park Plaza. Police confronted the 21-year-old near the Ale House, where he claimed he had taken the sign from a dumpster. Officers agreed that the sign appeared to be rubbish, and it was summarily returned to the dumpster whence it came.
AUG. 24, 12:00 p.m. — A 19-year-old female student in Hinman’s Cleveland Hall reported that her BU parking permit had been stolen from off her desk. Her room, Rossie said, was unlocked.
AUG. 25, 10:04 p.m. — A cleaner reported that a toilet had been wrenched from the wall in a ground-floor men’s room in Science III. But it may have been an accident: “Possibly a large man,” Rossie said. “I don’t know who would hate toilets enough to do that.” Police have no suspects.
AUG. 26, 11:00 p.m. — A cleaner reported that a vacuum cleaner and a number of assorted bottles of cleaning fluid had been removed from their unlocked Glenwood Hall maintenance closet in Susquehanna Community and thrown over a bank. They were subsequently recovered, and the closet was locked. Police have no suspects.
AUG. 27, 8:34 p.m. — A resident assistant in Hinman College’s Lehman Hall reported the smell of burning marijuana coming from a room on the building’s second floor. The room’s 18-year-old occupant allowed police in, said Investigator Matthew Rossie of the BU police, where the officers found a marijuana “roach” (the remainder of a marijuana cigarette), two 12-packs of beer, two bottles of wine and assorted fireworks. The pot and fireworks were confiscated and destroyed, and suspect was ordered to pour out the alcohol. It was unclear if the suspect was referred to Campus Judicial Affairs, but alleged student misconduct is typically investigated by that office.
AUG. 27, 3:30 a.m. — A 19-year-old male student called police from inside Lehman Hall after he said he was menaced by four black males, who he said exited a dark-colored vehicle in that hall’s service drive brandishing a police-style nightstick. The victim said he had never seen the men before, Rossie said, but added that the student was also highly uncooperative. There are no suspects.
AUG. 27, 4:06 p.m. — A resident assistant reported smelling burning marijuana from behind Newing College’s Broome Hall. But when police arrived, the area was empty.
AUG. 28, 3:25 a.m. — A resident of Hinman College’s Smith Hall reported that three video game machines — Asteroids, Super Mario and pinball — had been vandalized in the hall’s first-floor lounge. The locks and front panels of the machines had been pried open, although it was unclear whether any change had been stolen. “One machine appears to run without the use of quarters,” Rossie said. There are no suspects.
