THURSDAY, OCT. 5, 8:10 p.m. — Binghamton’s New York State University Police responded to a call in Newing Dining Hall after a student threatened a Sodexho employee. The student’s outburst came after the employee confronted and accused him of stealing and “causing mischief” in the dining hall. Six days later, on Oct. 11, police arrested the student in Chenango Hall at 7:10 p.m. He has been charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, a violation. He will appear in Vestal Town Court on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
MONDAY, OCT. 9, 6:40 p.m. — A 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe parked in lot S2 reportedly sustained damage to its driver’s-side rear-quarter panel. There are no suspects. It will be nearly impossible to find out who or what did it, said Investigator Matt Rossie of the University Police. “There are so many damaged cars,” he said.
MONDAY, OCT. 9, 6:50 p.m. — Police responded to a call and found a man in Lecture Hall dressed entirely in black, including a black backpack and ski mask. The 19-year-old male was identified as part of the Malik fraternity, and the clothing was part of a “pledge annotation.” Evidently, there was “concern … given the history of [recent] school shootings,” Rossie said. Rossie said officers encouraged the student to behave in a way that would not cause alarm and left him to himself — but if someone had been hurt due to panic, Rossie said, he could have been charged.
MONDAY, OCT. 9, 7:36 p.m. — An individual found a bag with a gram of white powder in lot Q1. He called the police and turned the bag over to officers; the powder later tested as cocaine. Police have no leads as to who owned the bag.
MONDAY, OCT. 9, 11:30 p.m. — Police responded to a call from a resident assistant who reported the smell of marijuana. The resident refused to open the door, but was sent to the campus judicial system for failure to cooperate and unlawful possession of marijuana.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11, 7:30 a.m. — A student was observed by police writing on a sidewalk along West Drive in chalk. He was advertising a party for a fraternity at a local bar. No charges were filed.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11, 8:07 p.m. — Police responded to a call of suspicious marijuana odor at Newing College’s Bingham Hall. Police entered the building and knocked on the door of the suspected source of the smell. The door was open; officers entered and found two students in the room. When the officers asked where the marijuana was, one of the students, an 18-year-old male, produced it from inside a dresser drawer and claimed ownership. The student who produced the marijuana was arrested for unlawful possession of the drug, a misdemeanor. He will appear in Vestal Town Court on Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
