SUNDAY, NOV. 14, 3:57 a.m. ‘ Patrol responded to a fire alarm in Mountainview College’s Marcy Hall, said Investigator Dennis P. Bush of Binghamton’s New York State University Police. Upon arrival, the officers observed fog on the third floor of the building, indicating that a fire extinguisher had been discharged. They located a Residential Life staff member, who confirmed that there had been a discharge and reported that someone may have seen the suspects who had done it. Occupants of Marcy Hall were then gathered in Appalachian Dining Hall due to the cold weather, and after the Vestal Fire Department had arrived, a ResLife member emerged from the hall stating that they had located the suspects. Police spoke to an 18-year-old male and a 21-year-old male and, upon identifying them, discovered that they were not Binghamton University students. One explained that they were visiting their cousin in Binghamton, and when asked why they were not with him, explained that their cousin was still Downtown. He said they decided to return to campus on their own. Police observed sneaker tracks on the floor of the third floor of Marcy that were consistent with those the suspects were wearing, and promptly arrested the two. Both denied having had involvement in the case, but gave conflicting accounts when questioned. The two suspects were issued appearance tickets for the Vestal Town Court.
SUNDAY, NOV. 14, 6:15 a.m. ‘ An 18-year-old non-student who had been arrested previously during the night was released from custody, only to walk to the corner of the Couper Administration Building and urinate on the wall in plain view of the arresting officers, Bush said. The suspect was immediately re-arrested and reportedly explained himself to officers by saying, ‘I really had to piss.’ This statement doubled as a confession, and the suspect was issued an additional court appearance ticket. He was then escorted off campus and instructed not to return.
