It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that improving their record from 0-12 to 10-10 in the course of just one year was an impressive feat for Binghamton wrestling.
The Bearcats finished up their season with a respectable performance at the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships hosted by George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Finishing in seventh place with 28 points, the team was not in a position to threaten the Hofstra Pride, who took home the team title with 138.5 points, but victories by freshman Josh Patterson and junior Kyle Fried gave the team something to cheer about.
The biggest victory for the Bearcats came from the 174-pound Patterson, who knocked off the No. 1 seed and 9th-ranked wrestler in the nation to place third in his weight class. He will represent Binghamton at the NCAA Championships March 15 to 17 in Auburn Hills, Mich. Patterson, the youngest of three brothers who currently wrestle for Binghamton, was a six-year letter winner and team captain at Wayne Central High. Ranked first in New York and seventh nationally among 171-pound seniors last year, he posted a 25-8 record in his college debut season, including a 16-4 mark in dual matches.
