For the third week in a row, college football will have a new No. 1 ranked team. Perennial national championship contender Florida has lost three straight games. No. 5 Nebraska fell to unranked Texas. What in the world has happened to college football?

The college football world has been turned upside down this year with weekly upsets of highly-ranked teams, the rise of Boise State and the uncertainty of the much-coveted No. 1 ranking in the recently released Bowl Championship Series poll. After starting off the year ranked No. 1 by virtually every poll, Alabama was stunned last week by South Carolina and its legendary coach, Steve Spurrier. Spurrier’s former team, the Florida Gators, who are just two years removed from winning the national championship, will inevitably be left outside the top 25 when the new rankings are released later this week. Also left off the current AP rankings are traditional football powers Virginia Tech, the University of Miami and the University of Texas.

While many high-profile programs have struggled, Boise State has ridden waves of good fortune and timely wins to an improbable shot at the national championship. After starting the year as No. 3, Boise State has done everything possible to give itself a shot at playing in the national championship game. In an opening week game that was as thrilling as a Muhammad Ali knockout and as suspenseful as an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Boise State proved to all of its doubters that the Broncos are legitimate title contenders, beating then-No. 10 Virginia Tech with a late touchdown pass from star quarterback Kellen Moore. They have continued to impress, beating teams by a combined score of 285-74 while continuing their dominance over the Western Athletic Conference.

The first BCS rankings were released Sunday, and although Boise State was projected to be No. 1, it came in at No. 3. Oklahoma holds the top spot, with Oregon ranked No. 2. Prior to Ohio State’s loss, it was projected by ESPN’s Brad Edwards to be in fifth, but as a result of its first defeat they sit at No. 10.

With conference championship games scheduled for top-ranked teams through the final weeks of the season, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will be the lucky two teams voted into the national championship game. But one thing is for certain: it’s going to be one hell of an ending to an already exciting season.
