U. of Haifa professor lectures on Jewish image
BU’s Judaic studies department will host Jewish History Professor Emeritus Kenneth Stow to speak on Jewish images in a lecture entitled, “Jewish Dogs: An Image and Its Interpreters — Continuity in the Jewish-Christian Relationship.”
The lecture is sponsored by the Yedida K. Stillman Memorial Fund and the Judaic studies department. He will speak on Mon., Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Hall 10.

Annual fundraiser for the area observatory and museum
The Roberson Museum and Science Center and Kopernik Observatory launched their 2005-06 annual campaign for donations on Oct. 26 with an “aggressive goal” of $230,000.
The funds will go towards educational programs for students and the community, and new permanent exhibitions to enrich the cultural background to those who visit.
“It is an honor to raise funds for this community treasure. Roberson touches not only our quality of life at home, but also keeps our community in touch with the universe,” said Peter Cronk, Managing Partner of Riger Advertising.
The Museum’s Board of Directors has already pledged $20,000 toward the goal.
“I am urging everyone to support this important endeavor and ensure the museum and observatory are here for generations to come,” Cronk said.

YMCA aerobathon
The YMCA is hosting its 2005 Aerobathon on Sat., Nov. 19 from 9-11 a.m. in the Binghamton YMCA aerobics room.
“The Aerobathon is a two-hour aerobics extravaganza,” the press release said, taught by instructors in 15-minute blocks. Participants will have a chance to experience a variety of classes, teachings and styles.

Conference on overcoming domestic violence
Nationally known author and expert Lundy Bancroft will speak about domestic violence on Fri., Nov. 4, at the Best Western Binghamton Regency located at 1 Sabro Square in Binghamton from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
His lecture is entitled, “Rebuilding Lives: Overcoming the Impact of Domestic Violence on Families and Children.” The objectives of holding the conference are human service, mental health, criminal justice, medical professionals and school personnel.
Lundy Bancroft has written: The Batterer as Parent: Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics, Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men, and When Dad Hurts Mom: Helping Your Children Heal the Wounds of Witnessing Abuse.

Mayor promotes city’s river trails initiative
Mayor Richard A. Bucci hosted a news conference on Wed., Nov. 2 to discuss new phases of the City’s River Trails Initiative. Bucci said that walking paths along The Chenango River and Underpass are now open.
The conference highlighted phase 2A of the project, which spans from Confluence Park to the Court Street Bridge. He made mention of plans for a blue stone amphitheater and walking paths along the water’s edge, now open. This phase of the project cost $534,000, which was secured from various state agencies.
“The City has made a commitment to funding the River Trails Initiative without the use of local tax dollars,” Mayor Bucci said. He added that all grants for the program were specifically allocated for this particular development and could not be spent on other expenditures.

Multi-cultural youth center forum
The Broome County Martin Luther King Commission wants to gauge interest or need in creating a Multi-Cultural Youth Center for the Tri-Cities.
The commission will be holding a conference on Nov. 17 at Binghamton City Hall in the Binghamton City Council Chamber from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be free refreshments and networking opportunities.
The forum is open to all interested community members and is sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Youth Centers Initiative of the Broome County Martin Luther King Commission.
