Music Department to host free concert

On Tue., Nov. 29 the BU Percussion Ensemble will perform a free concert in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall at 8 p.m. Among the songs they will perform are: “Overture for Percussion Ensemble,” by composer John Beck, “Auburn Run-Out,” by Ernest Muzquiz, and “Can Can,” from Orpheus by Jacques Offenbach.

The event is sponsored by the BU Department of music. Conductor Daniel Fabricius has been the Percussion Instructor at BU since 1992. He has adjudicated at music festivals throughout New York.

BU students’ photos to appear in exhibition

BU students in the advanced photography class will present their work at an exhibition entitled, “Modern Artifact: From a Fresh Perspective, Black and White Images by Nine Emerging Photographers.”

Also featured during the exhibition will be a local band, “One Who Showed,” a Harpur Palate poetry reading and a demonstration by an acclaimed literary journal.

The event will take place on Fri., Dec. 2 from 6-9 p.m. at JungleScience, #33 Court Street in downtown Binghamton. BU professor awarded Fulbright scholarship

BU professor Leslie Carlisle Gates was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and is conducting research in Venezuela on the country’s market reforms and politics. She is also teaching a graduate class, “The Politics of Neoliberalism,” at the Universidad Central de Venezuela.

“She definitely—what I think—is one of the true rising stars when it comes to sociology and Latin American Studies,” said Ricardo Laremont, chairman of BU’s Sociology Department.

Since 2001 Professor Gates has taught sociology courses at BU and was chosen from nine scholars within the SUNY faculty, and among 850 scholars nationally who will spend the 2005-06 year abroad.

BU’s Glenn Kiriyama was named America East volleyball coach of the year.

After guiding BU’s volleyball team to the number two seed in the conference with an 18-11, 10-2 AE record, seventh year BU volleyball coach Glenn Kiriyama was named conference coach of the year by his peers.

Five Bearcat players were also honored at the banquet, held on the SUNY Albany campus. Kiriyama is the 12th BU coach in four seasons to earn this top coaching honor and in his seventh years holds a 119-95 record, 56 percent.
