Alternative Heating Sources Safety Reminder
This winter could be difficult and experts say that heating fuel prices will increase substantially. Many people will experiment with alternative heating sources this upcoming winter, which, if done safely, is not a problem.
Broome County Health and Emergency Service Officials urge people to take the time to be sure that their heating units are installed and function properly. Heating units should be checked by a professional to be sure.
“It is a good practice to have an annual inspection conducted by a reputable expert on all fuel-fired heating systems, gas appliances and fireplaces to ensure proper combustion and ventilation,” said Michael Aswad, Broome County’s Fire Coordinator and Emergency Services Director. He warns that deadly fires can result if they are not installed and maintained properly.
Another concern is carbon monoxide build up, which occurs if fuels are burned improperly. It is an odorless, invisible and tasteless gas. The first signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like in nature including: dizziness, weariness and nausea. Signs, which worsen as the concentration of gas rises include: loss of muscle control, sleepiness, reddening of the skin, confusion and unconsciousness.
“If you suspect a carbon monoxide problem, leave the building and get fresh air immediately, call 911. Go to a health care provider, and as your utuility company or local fire department to check the carbon monoxide levels,” said Claudia Edwards, Public Health Director of the Broome County Health Department.
